July 3, Pre Departure Preparation

After a lifetime of dreaming, years of plotting, and a year of concerted boat preparation, I stand at the cusp of our cruising adventure.

The plan is to sail on "Mariah" from Seattle to Southern California in July and August 2012, then resume in November from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas (Mexico) and return to San Diego in January 2013 where "Mariah" will be shipped home to Seattle.

Mariah is our 32' Gulf Pilothouse sailboat. She is a heavy displaced, full keel, convertible cutter. She is slower but stable and boasts a large interior volume for her length. We've added solar panels, wind generator, and a cockpit enclosure.

Im currently packing all the gear and toys which include 2 folding mountain bikes, 2 sit on top kayaks, 2 surfboards, fishing and snorkeling gear. Hopefully there will still be room for passengers.

It is now Wednesday and Im frantically getting ready for our Saturday departure. Rhys is arriving from San Francisco on Friday afternoon when we will grocery shop and spend the night at my house. We will depart to Port Townsend  Saturday where we will meet TR on Monday and then the three of us will move onto Neah Bay. We will depart from Neah Bay when weather permits and attempt our first big passage (700 miles) to San Francisco. Vinnie and the kids will drive down to San Francisco and meet us there.

So thats it for now. The big packing day is tomorrow. time to sleep. Happy 4th of July to all!!!    Ken
